TYPICAL PATTERNS FOR EARLY IDENTIFICATION OF SEVERE CONVECTIVE ACTIVITY ON RADAR AND SATELLITE IMAGES; CASES FROM THE SUMMER OF 2008
Abstract
Early identification of severe convective activity is one of the key parameters of weather monitoring for every weather service. Identification of typical radar echoes and satellite imagery patterns can (along with knowledge about conceptual models of severe storms) yield a fast focus for the forecaster on the processes that can be potentially hazardous to property and even to human lives. Several days in summer 2008 during which there was hail and wind damage were chosen as the subject of this study. All of them show some typical features that are a sign of the severity of the process or can even imply its longevity.
