CATASTROPHIC WINDS IN THE WORLD DURING 2008
Abstract
In terms of numbers of tropical storms and intensity, the tropical cyclone season in the Atlantic Ocean was above average. Eight hurricanes developed. An above-average number of tropical storms developed in the East Pacific, whereas the number of tropical storms in the West Pacific was average. The intensity of the activity in both seasons was, however, below average. 12 typhoons developed in the West Pacific. China was severely hit by typhoon Hagupit, which was the most devastating typhoon in 2008. In the Indian Ocean, the number of tropical storms was above average, with the catastrophic cyclone Nargis claiming at least 146,000 victims. At least 149,000 people died all over the world as a result of the consequences of tropical cyclones. The death toll reported due to tornados was 134; 125 of these were recorded in the USA.
