STRENGTHENING CO-OPERATION OF THE WESTERN BALKAN COUNTRIES WITH THE EUROPEAN UNION IN THE FIELD OF CIVIL PROTECTION AND THE ROLE OF SLOVENIA IN THIS PROCESS
Abstract
The Western Balkan countries have a clear European perspective, and as candidate countries and potential candidate countries for membership of the European Union they hold a status that enables some sort of co-operation with the EU even before full membership. These countries are threatened by natural and other disasters that may have cross-border effects. Therefore co-operation in the field of civil protection is one of the EU policies where the co-operation is in the interest of all parties. For several years, Slovenia has been closely co-operating with the Western Balkan countries at a bilateral and regional levels, while the activities on the European level have been intensified on Slovenia’s initiative during the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. These activities continue today.
