HIGH WATERS IN SLOVENIA IN 2007
Abstract
The Nobel prize for peace was given to a group of scientists investigating the possible effects of climate change in 2007, when catastrophic flooding in Slovenia occurred. Six people died during the floods, and water changed the shape of some mountainous regions. The hydrological situation in 2007 was similar to the stated definition of the possible effects of climate change on the water cycle. High waters with record discharges occurred in late summer, with torrents flooding even in areas where floods are rare and hydrological drought was significant. High waters in 2007 show us how fragile and vulnerable modern society is in comparison with the force of nature. Similar floods occurred in the past, but everything indicates that society of that time was better adjusted to such natural phenomena.
