CLIMATOLOGICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE EXCEPTIONAL PRECIPITATION EVENT OF 18 SEPTEMBER 2007
Abstract
In September 2007, parts of Slovenia were severely affected by catastrophic floods. The cause for of the unusually strong precipitation was a combination of a special synoptic situation and orographic lifting of an unstable air mass. The zZone extending from Bohinj and Cerkljansko Hhribovje towards the Celje Vvalley received more precipitation in a few hours than normally in the whole entire month of September. Previous precipitation records were broken at many meteorological stations, with a 100-year return period being exceeding at many of them.
