CATASTROPHIC WINDS IN THE WORLD IN 2007

Abstract

The Atlantic tropical cyclone season was above average in the number of tropical storm and below average in its intensity. Six hurricanes formed, three of which (Humberto, Dean and Felix) made landfall. The number of tropical storms was below average in the east Pacific Ocean and around average in the west Pacific Ocean; however, the entire season was below average in its intesity. 15 typhoons developed in the west Pacific Ocean. Three typhoon reached Japan, two typhoons reached Taiwan, six typhoons passed the Philipinnes, while China was struck by typhoon Wipha. The Indian Ocean witnessed an average number of tropical storms. The consequences of tropical cyclones caused a minimum 5200 casualties worldwide. Tornadoes caused 127 deaths around the world; of these, there were 26 tornadoes in the USA which claimed 81 casualties.
