Abstract

In May 2007 in front of the harbour at Koper the Administration of the Republic of Slovenia for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief held a national protection and rescue exercise, Sea 2007, in which it verified how well the constituent parts of the system of protection from natural and other disasters are prepared to intervene in an accident involving hazardous substances. The scenario of the exercise was entirely realistic, since it envisaged the collision of two vessels, causing a spill of motor fuel, with a fire breaking out in the galley of one vessel and personnel being injured. Rescue crews arrived at the scene of the accident in real time and performed their tasks very well. The assessment following the exercise was unanimous. We have taken a major step forward in this area.
