SOME TECTONIC, SEISMOTECTONIC AND SEISMOLOGICAL TERMS – PART 1

Abstract

Below are given suggestions and explanations for some Slovenian tectonic, seismotectonic and seismological terms, which are important for engineering seismology and earthquake engineering - particularly for seismic hazard assessments. Moreover many of them are of more general importance. English translations of terms are also added. At the end an English-Slovenian glossary of the relevant terms is supplemented. Some terms are taken from existing Slovenian terminological dictionaries. However, the greater part of the proposed terms are neither included in the new Geological Terminological Dictionary (Pavšič, ed., 2006) nor in any other published Slovenian technical dictionary, although many presented terms are used in practice, some also in less appropriate forms. The author apologizes for all the errors made in this proposal. His main intention was to challenge and to animate Slovenian geologists and seismologists to fill the gap in Slovenian terminology of this important area for the professional field.
