Abstract

The global annual temperature from combined land and ocean surfaces in 2006 was 0.5 °C above average, ranking the year as the 5th warmest on record. During the past century, global surface temperatures have increased. The temperature of the middle troposphere is increasing and the temperature of the lower stra[1]tosphere is decreasing. Global precipitation in 2006 was much above the 1961-1990 average, the largest value being measured in the last five years. Some regions were affected by severe floods, some regions by longterm drought. There were several thousand deaths related to floods in East Africa and India. In China 18 million people suffered due to drought.
