CATASTROPHIC WINDS IN THE WORLD IN 2006
Abstract
The season of tropical cyclones above the Atlantic Ocean was below average in terms of number and intensity. Five hurricanes occurred, none of which reached land. An above average number of tropical storms occurred above the eastern Pacific Ocean, but below average above the western part, although typhoons were very intensive. Fifteen typhoons developed above the western Pacific Ocean. Six traversed the Philippines, and one of the strongest typhoons to date, Saomai, struck China. There was an average number of tropical storms in the Indian Ocean. At least 2532 people died as a result of tropical cyclones. The number of powerful tornadoes in the USA was below average. They caused the death of 66 people.
