PROTECTION OF THE KALCE – COL REGIONAL ROAD FROM FALLING ROCKS
Abstract
Traffic on the Kalce - Col regional road near Col has been endangered by rockfalls since the road was built. The dark grey limestone on the slope is very fractured because of the nearby geological joint. Disintegration is also promoted by big daily temperature oscillations. Two major rockfalls occurred in the winter of 2005/2006, what was the reason for a total roadblock. In order to provide traffic safety, a combination of flexible rockfall barriers and deeply anchored nets of high tensile strength was used. The principle of the flexible barrier is the dynamic transmission of the energy of falling rocks. Deeply anchored nets of high tensile strength, however, prevent the rocks from crumbling.
