EARTHQUAKE INTENSITY AND MACROSEISMIC SCALE

Abstract

Earthquake intensity is a mainly descriptive and partly quantitative statistical quantity. It is defined for an area and for a population of elements at risk, e.g. buildings. A macroseismic scale is a rough integer instrument for classification of earthquake size. Despite its simplicity, depending on the application, intensity can represent seismic vulnerability, hazard, risk or damage. Intensity thus remains a useful earthquake parameter, in spite of the loss of the most important field of its application – earthquake resistant design.
