EARTHQUAKES AND TSUNAMIS
Abstract
Earthquakes resulting from tectonic movements on the sea bottom are sometimes accompanied by tsunamis. In view of this, there is a common belief such earthquakes generate tsunamis. However, an earthquake and a tsunami can be regarded as two phenomena, not connected as cause and effect, but rather as two different effects of the same cause: the sudden movement of the tectonic plates. It appears that understanding the relation of tsunamis to earthquakes depends on the definition of an earthquake.
