HIGH WATERS IN SLOVENIA IN 2005
Abstract
The time distribution of high waters on Slovene rivers and high tides on the coast was different in 2005 than the normal distribution. Torrential floods occurred during the summer, with the River Mura exceeding its record value of discharge. Fewer high waters were recorded in the autumn. The time distribution and the character of the high waters in 2005 was similar to that given by scientists in scenarios of the possible effects of climate change on the water cycle. In the warm part of the year, torrential waters flooded areas in which floods are rare, and record discharges occurred on the major rivers. High waters and the effects of floods in 2005 indicate possible scenarios of high water events in the future.
