EARTHQUAKES IN THE ILIRSKA BISTRICA REGION
Abstract
An earthquake in Ilirska Bistrica once again highlights the earthquake activity of this region. In terms of earthquake history and released seismic energy, this region is among the most active in Slovenia. Only in the Idrija, Ljubljana, Krško-Brežice regions, and recently Upper Posočje, have in the past released more earthquake energy. The good fortune in ill is that the earthquakes epicentres are relatively deep – for the most part more than 10 km – so the surface impact is less than would be the case with a shallow epicentre. However, earthquakes in Ilirska Bistrica can be counted on in the future, too, so it is nessary to to be prepared for them, mainly with earthquake resistant construction. The article explains the main reasons for the occurrence of earthquakes, a review of historical events, a more exact description of the recent more powerful earthquakes (in 1956, 1995, 1998 and 2005) and discusses damage to buildings.
