Abstract

The earthquake that occurred in Pakistan on the 8th October at 3:50 am and 40 seconds UTC, or 5 hours later local time, was one of the strongest earthquakes on Earth in the past year. Its high magnitude (Mw = 7.6) and shallow depth (26 km), with the focal point in thrust structures, caused catastrophic consequences. Currently available data give 87,000 fatalities, 75,000 injured and 4 million people who fled their homes (400,000 homes were totally destroyed). There were 1,350 fatalities and 6,200 injured in India. By the end of October, there had been around a thousand aftershocks, which reached and exceeded the lever magnitude (Mw) of 4.0. The focal points of the earthquakes in this part of the world are the result of the movement of the Indian plate towards the Eurasian plate (about 40 mm/year).
