Abstract

The season of tropical cyclones over the Atlantic was one of the most intensive and above average in the number of cyclones, average over the western Pacific Ocean and below average over the eastern part. Fifteen hurricanes developed over the Atlantic Ocean. The most intensive hurricane to date, Wilma, was observed over the Atlantic Ocean. Seven tropical storms reached the USA, of which Katrina and Rita caused the greatest damage and killed the most people. They simply flooded New Orleans. Sixteen typhoons developed over the Pacific Ocean. The strongest typhoons that reached land were Haitang, Matsa, Talim, Damrey and Longwang. The number of tornadoes in the USA was below average. At least 39 people died because of them.
