ANNIVERSARIES OF MAJOR EARTHQUAKES
Abstract
Three major earthquakes have been remembered recently, which affected various parts of the world in the past. On 1 November 2005 there was the 250th anniversary of the earthquake in Lisbon, which claimed the most lives of known European earthquakes. The 18th April 2006 was the centenniary of the San Francisco earthquake, which claimed the most lives in North American earthquake history, and 6th May 2006 was the 30th anniversary of the earthquake in Friuli, which we Slovenes have almost forgotten, although almost 12,000 buildings were damaged or destroyed in north-western Slovenia. Important international conferences took place during the anniversaries, the contents of the most important are decribed in special contributions.
