FIRE AT SELA NA KRASU – A FORESTER’S VIEW
Abstract
The forest fire of 2003 near the village of Sela na Krasu was the largest to date in the natural environment and one of the few in recent years to have necessitated a special approach to organizing the fire-fighting operation. A large fire, namely, requires the coordination of several hundred people, as well as a great deal of technical support on the ground and in the air. Those involved in extinguishing the fire must have a good sense of direction and knowledge of current meteorological and other data. The extensive forest areas affected by the fire also represent a challenge for their reforestation, both in terms of organizing the reforestation project and in providing the necessary funds.
