EARTHQUAKE IN INDONESIA ON 26 DECEMBER 2004 – ORIGIN, TSUNAMIES AND EFFECTS
Abstract
The earthquake of 24 December 2004 originated in the seismographic region that surrounds the Pacific Ocean and is called the Ring of Fire. It’s magnitude of 8.8 (Ms) ranks it among the most powerful earthquakes of recent decades. Deep below the ocean floor it activated a fracture zone around 1000 km in length. The vertical shift of the sea floor caused the occurrence of a tsunami, the extent and effects of which were catastrohic. It will have taken at least 300,000 casualties to persuade those responsible to construct an alarm system, and above all educate the population about the effects of natural disasters that are everyday phenomena in those regions.
