BIRD FLUE – SOME REFLECTIONS
Abstract
The basic characterics of the new human disease from influenza A (H5N1) virus are presented. Some experiences from the 1997 outbtreak are mentioned and the question is discussed of what measures should be adopted by public health authorities. A vaccine is obviously the most promising preventive measure from both theoretical and practical points of view. As a conclusion, some criticisms are expressed about the reporting of new influenza cases in some Asian countries: faulty reporting and denying the new disease for local reasons could promote the development of a new influenza pandemic.
