USE OF METEOSAT SECOND GENERATION SATELLITE IMAGES FOR MONITORING EXTREME WEATHER
Abstract
The Meteosat-8 meteorological satellite is the first of the Meteosat Second Generation satellites and has been operational since 29 January 2004. Meteosat-8 offers improved monitoring of the atmosphere in comparison to the options of the first generation. Improved measurements are important for better monitoring and, consequently, better nowcasting for some hours in advance. Using the new measurements makes it possible to monitor developments in the atmosphere more, and in the illustrated case specific characteristics in the development of convection are also visible. Furthermore, satellite measurements are a good complement to radar measurements when monitoring convective developments in the atmosphere.
