FLOODS AND THE EUROPEAN FORECASTING SYSTEM
Abstract
Floods are major natural hazard causing enormous economic damage and considerable loss of human life. Occurrences of flooding have increased in number in recent years worldwide. The need to forecast high waters and floods with sufficient lead time has become paramount. For that purpose, a prototype of a European flood forecasting system has been developed, which can provide forecasts and warnings for three to ten days in advance, based on medium-range weather forecasts of the ECMWF model. The spatial resolution of the system on a European scale is 5 km based on the LISFLOOD model. For the Danube River basin, the system is being developed at a resolution of 1 km.
