HIGH WATERS IN SLOVENIA IN 2003
Abstract
It appears that the consequences of climate changes have also influenced the hydrological situation in Slovenia. Extreme hydrological events such as drought and floods are predominant and occurred simultaneously in Slovenia. There were less high waters in 2003 than in previous years. Luckily, high waters did not cause any major floods this year, except for torrential floods in the Zgornjesavska valley and along the Tržiška Bistrica River. In August, torrential floods caused major damage in the Kranjska Gora region. In that period, a low water situation with a hydrological drought was recorded. At some gauging stations, the minimal water levels reached extreme minimal values at the same time as torrential floods occurred. High waters in autumn caused floods in the characteristic flooding areas. High sea levels along the Slovene coast frequently flooded lower parts of the coast, especially in October.
