Abstract

Slovenia had average windiness in 2003. Slightly above-average winds were recorded in the Primorska region, and below-average winds in the Koroška region and over the Alps. As every year, material damage was caused primarily by storm winds and the bora wind in the Primorska region. In December, a strong north wind blew below the Karavanke mountains and in the Posočje region. Owing to the strong bora wind, the Ajdovščina[1]Podnanos mainroad was closed for heavy vehicles over 8 tons for a period of 21 days. The strongest bora wind gusts reached speeds of up to 130 km/h. Heavy storms accompanied by strong winds causing considerable damage occurred on 15 June over Maribor, Pomurje, Zreče, Slovenske Konjice and Slovenska Bistrica, and on 11 September over the Gorenjska region, Ljubljana, Krško, Sevnica and Brežice. Fallen trees damaged many cars and obstructed traffic after falling on roads.
