GLOBAL CATASTROPHIC WINDS IN 2003
Abstract
The tropical cyclone season over the Atlantic Ocean was the longest since 1952 and above average for the number of cyclones; the number was also just below average over the East Pacific. Fourteen hurricanes developed over the Atlantic and Pacific, claiming 64 lives. The most powerful hurricanes to reach land were Isabel and Juan from the Atlantic and Ignacio and Nora from the Eastern Pacific. The West Pacific had an average typhoon season, but they were unusually intense. Seventeen typhoons developed, claiming 199 lives. The most powerful typhoons to reach land were Maemi, Imbudo and Dujuan. The tornado season in the United States was above average, causing 57 deaths.
