Abstract

Algeria was struck by a strong, shallow earthquake on May 21, 2003 at 1844 UTC. Due to its magnitude (6.8 Mw), it caused severe damage in five provinces in northern and central Algeria. The earthquake coordinates were 36.89 longitude and 3.78 latitude, which means it occurred just offshore from the city of Zemmouri in the Boumerdes province about 50 kilometres east of the capital Algiers. Therefore, most of the damage was caused in the Boumerdes province which includes the eastern part of Algiers.
