THAWING OF PERMAFROST AND LANDFALLS IN HIGH ALPINE MOUNTAINS
Abstract
Permafrost consists of frozen ground and rocks. It is a common feature in sub-polar regions, and it is also present sporadically in the Alps. During summers, permafrost thaws and, due to geometric reasons, the amount of thaw in mountains is increased. Hot summers are connected to climatic changes. In summer 2003, the disintegration of several slopes and rock falls were reported in the Alps because a lot of the permafrost was thawing. Some of the figures depict a rock fall on the west face of Aig. du Gouter near Mt. Blanc above Chamonix (France).
