DIS-ALP: ALPINE REGION DISASTER INFORMATION SYSTEM
Abstract
The management of natural risks and the prevention of disasters in a mountain environment require broad and accessible information on previous disasters. This is important for interdisciplinary and interregional research and decisions on preventing disasters and dealing with natural risks. But the information needs—defined by the practitioners of spatial planning, risk prevention and catastrophe management and in line with the needs of the people affected—are currently not being met. DIS-ALP will focus on a solution to this documentation and information gap on natural disasters with: – the refinement and standardisation of existing methods used in the documentation of disasters and their implementation on a GIS-based web platform, – instructional materials and training for persons involved in the documentation of events and – new and innovative technological tools for data collection in the field (integrating GPS, PDA and online maps).
