Abstract

Among the floods which occured around the globe in the year 2002, the majority of those in central Europe were located in three places. 55 persons lost their lives. In comparison with the average annual precipitation, 25 to 40 percent of the annual precipitation fell in those regions. The water levels of the Elbe, Berounk and Vltava Rivers reached 500- year cyclical return periods in their upper streams. The Danube and Elbe flooded. Some major cities in Austria, the Czech Republic and Germany were flooded. Luckily, Slovenia was spared catastrophic floods in 2002. That year, high waters didn’t cause the major floods that had happened in neighbouring countries. If there had been the heavy precipitation in Slovenia as there was in Central Europe that year, high waters in Slovenia could have had a much more devastating effect. Due to the unpredictible situation caused by the drainage of a huge mass of water, a catastrophic flood in Slovenia could be more devastating than the floods in 1990 and 1998.
