Abstract

The earthquake occurred on September 6, 2002 at 01:21 UTC. The epicenter was approximately 40 km offshore. The INGV in Rome, which operates more than 300 instruments throughout Italy, issued the first preliminary data just 40 seconds after the earthquake. This data differed from the final values only by several kilometres. Magnitude values remained the same (ML=5.6). The PGA was 0.13 g and depth 10 kilometres. The earthquake caused only minor damage to structures. For scientists, the secondary earthquake effects, such as the enormous landslide in the village of Cerda, were more interesting.
