CLIMATE IN 1999 AND 2000 – ANNUAL REVIEWS
Abstract
In both years, 1999 and 2000, temperatures were above the long-term average. 1999 was one of the warmest years in the period of global instrument records. The 1990s were the warmest decade of the past century. In the Northern Hemisphere at least, the 20th century was most likely the warmest in the last millennium. La niña influenced temperatures and precipitation patterns throughout 1999, weakening in July and August 2000. Extreme weather and climate-related events were numerous in 1999 and 2000, causing devastation in many parts of the world. These years were marked by a particularly high number of floods, millions of people were left without homes, food and drinking water, and many lost their lives. Several strong cyclones caused severe flooding and devastation in various parts of the world, and some areas were affected by drought.
