Abstract

In the autumn of 2000, especially in October and November, the following synoptic situation was prevailent: a deep low over Western and Middle Europe and a strong SW flow over Slovenia. Due to the advection of moist and warm air, heavy local precipitation was of long duration. In some places, four times the mean amount of precipitation in two months (October and November) was recorded. The main characteristic of the high water situation in November was long duration. High waters were present throughout the month, with frequent flooding of rivers. The high water peaks in some parts of rivers and the water levels of Karst lakes reached record values in the observed period. The highest discharge of the Savinja River near Solčava reached a 100- year return value, the same applies for the Meža near Črna, the upper reaches of the Soča River with its tributaries, the Tolminka and the Učja, while the highest peak discharges of the Sava Dolinka in some places were the highest in the observed period. The flooded areas in the Karst valleys of the Notranjska region were above normal. The water level of Cerknica Lake reached an all-time high.
