Abstract

On the morning of 17 August 1999, an earthquake struck the area of the city of Izmit (Kocaeli) along the east coast of the Sea of Marmara in western Turkey. The strong earthquake took 17,840 lives. It occured at 0 h 1 min and 39.1 UTC, i.e. three hours later according to local time, at a depth of around 17 km. The body wave magnitude (Mb) was 6.3, the duration magnitude (Md) 6.7, the moment magnitude (Mw) 7.4, and the surface wave magnitude was as high as 7.8 (Ms). The very large effects on the surface are the consequence of the relatively shallow hypocentre and unfavourable seismological conditions (3, 4).
