FLOOD DAMAGE RESPONSE BASED ON ECONOMICALLY ASSESSED FLOOD DAMAGE
Abstract
Effective and appropriate response to natural and other disasters call for a knowledge of natural conditions, the scale of expected damage and the degree of threat to man and his environment, as well as a set of measures aimed at reducing damage. A crucial issue in addressing flood events is a knowledge of the causes of flood emergencies, the actual use of immovable property, human activities, the scale of expected damages, probability of occurrence of events, and available countermeasures. The estimation of expected flood damage for a flood area or sub-areas presented below allows for selective, goal-oriented prevention and rescue activities focused on areas with the highest expected damage, and the implementation of preventive measures aimed at stopping the further growth of anticipated damage, including their cost-benefit analysis.
