Abstract

In 2022 there were 43 earthquakes across the world which either reached or exceeded a moment magnitude (Mw) of 6.5. None had a magnitude greater than or equal to 8.0; eleven were between 7.0 and 7.9. At least 30 earthquakes claimed human lives; in total there were at least 1760 victims. The 10 September 2022 earthquake on Papua New Guinea and the 19 September 2022 earthquake in Mexico ranked highest in terms of released energy, with a moment magnitude of 7.6. The most devastating earthquake, with at least 1163 victims, occurred on 21 June in Afganistan, with a moment magnitude of 6.0. The strongest earthquake in Europe, with a moment magnitude of 6.6, struck Cyprus on 11 January 2022.
