INCREASED WATER TURBIDITY IN RIVERS IN 2023
Abstract
The extreme hydrological events that Slovenia was exposed to several times in 2023 also caused an increase in water turbidity. This was significantly increased in many rivers. At the gauging stations, where continuous recording of water turbidity is carried out, we compared the data with period values and found excesses in both intensity and duration. The water turbidity was increased most often in the Dravinja River, while seasonal values were exceeded the most in the Sora River. The highest turbidity was recorded in the Vipava River, where we recorded over 2000 NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Units) in October. Due to the extraordinary conditions along the rivers during high water events, the data from some gauging stations are unfortunately not available, but the data presented in this paper have been recorded correctly.
