Abstract

In September 2023, the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering and the UNESCO Chair on Water-Related Disaster Risk Reduction organized the first international HydRoData Summer School. The summer school was intended for participants enrolled into Master’s and doctoral studies (2nd and 3rd cycle students). During one week of activities, the participants learned about various aspects of data in hydrology: from its acquisition through field measurements, acquisition using remote sensing, processing using the R software tool, hydrological modelling, and finally, data interpretation and communication, and the ethics of their use. This paper presents the content and highlights of the summer school, the feedback of the participants, and a general overview of the importance of data in hydrology. The importance of data in hydrology was clearly demonstrated, among other things, in the flood event in August 2023, when some gauging stations on watercourses with record-high water levels failed, in the estimation of return periods of the event on individual rivers, in the search for the causes of such an event, in the communication to the public, and so on. In 2024, the HydRoData Summer School will be held for the second time. The content will be adapted to the current situation in the field of hydrological data.
