THE WORLD'S LARGEST EARTHQUAKES IN 2024
Abstract
In 2024, there were 28 earthquakes worldwide with a moment magnitude (MW) of at least 6.5. None of these earthquakes reached a magnitude of 8.0 or higher; ten had magnitudes between 7.0 and 7.9. At least 11 earthquakes claimed human lives, with a total of at least 601 victims. Most of the lives were claimed by a strong earthquake with
its epicentre in Japan on 1 January. With a moment magnitude of 7.5, this was also the strongest earthquake of
2024. The strongest earthquake in Europe in 2024 (MW = 5.8) occurred on 28 March, near the Peloponnese.
