Abstract

In 2024, earthquake activity in Slovenia was average, compared to the data of the last 20 years. The Seismic Network of the Republic of Slovenia recorded 2222 local earthquakes. There were 30 earthquakes with a local magnitude equal to or higher than 2.0. The strongest earthquake with its epicentre in Slovenia in 2024, with a local magnitude of 3.6, occurred on 9 December at 2:37 UTC, near Sopotnica in the municipality of Škofja Loka. Its maximum intensity was IV-V EMS-98. This was also the only earthquake in Slovenia in 2024 that exceeded intensity IV EMS-98. In the entire history of collecting macroseismic questionnaires in Slovenia, we collected the most questionnaires for this earthquake (9900). In 2024 the inhabitants of Slovenia felt at least 206 local earthquakes and 12 regional earthquakes (seven with their epicentres in Croatia, one in Montenegro, one in Austria and three in Italy).
