Povzetek

Leta 2024 je bilo po svetu zabeleženih 200 večjih poplavnih dogodkov, še več pa je bilo manjših, lokalnega značaja. Skupno je v poplavah umrlo najmanj 6910 ljudi, kar je manj kot leta 2023, ko je bilo žrtev 13.972. Poplave so bile med najbolj uničujočimi naravnimi nesrečami leta tako po številu žrtev kot gospodarski škodi, saj je bila ta po ocenah najmanj 84 milijard evrov. Najvišjo škodo so povzročile poplave v španski Valenciji, in sicer približno 16 milijard evrov. Največ poplav je bilo v Južni Ameriki, največ dogodkov pa so zabeležili v Kolumbiji in Indoneziji. Glavni vzroki poplav so bili močno deževje, monsuni in tropski cikloni, v nekaterih primerih tudi porušitve jezov. Zaradi podnebnih sprememb se povečuje pogostost izrednih in hudourniških poplav, plazov ter tudi morskih poplav zaradi dviga morske gladine, kar še dodatno povečuje ogroženost ljudi ter okolja.
