Abstract

In this study we wanted to examine the willingness to offer first aid of the students of different faculties of the University of Maribor. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted between students of the University of Maribor, using the same situation (a person lying in the street), but different types of people in need. The data were collected by a field survey with a questionnaire, using occasional sampling (N = 836). The study involved 401 students of medical study programmes and 435 students of other study programmes. On the issue of willingness to provide assistance to different people in the same situation, the results showed a good level of readiness to provide assistance, but there was a statistically significant difference in readiness to provide assistance in students of medical study programmes compared to other study programmes. Thirteen different people were placed in the situation needing help (from a child or a relative to an unknown person). The average value of the answers given for all thirteen situations in both groups of surveyed students exceeded the set average value (the lowest was 3.2).
