Abstract

In the year 2016, there were 220 cases of major floods, which is more than the year before (191) and all the years before that. However, the total number of flood victims was lower – 3,579. The largest number of floods occurred in the south and south-east Asia, specifically in India, Indonesia and China. In 2016, 3.6 million people had to leave their homes due to high waters (less than the previous year according to the DFO), and the floods affected 17.8 millions of square kilometres (DFO assessment).
