NEW SATELLITE PRODUCTS TO SUPPORT NOWCASTING
Abstract
EUMETSAT has developed nowcasting software, which from multi-spectral satellite data derives special products taking into account the physical properties and concepts of cloud systems. Three products from the Nowcasting Satellite Application Facility (NWPSAF) package are presented: cloud type, cloud top temperature and precipitating clouds. These products complement the single satellite image. In addition, owing to automatic classification NWCSAF enables objective analyses, which together with other remote sensing and in situ measurements is a basis for good nowcasting.
