Abstract

There are many strong earthquakes on our planet every year. They cause extensive damage to large structures, such as large dams, which are often built in active seismic regions. To estimate seismic actions and their consequences on dams, we decided it was necessary to continue seismic monitoring of dams in order to be sure of their safety. The regulation on seismic monitoring of large dams was issued in the National Gazette in 1999. It regulates seismic monitoring methods, technical standards for seismological equipment, conditions which must be fulfilled by the performer of the seismic monitoring and also defines the concept of large dams. The supervision of enforcement of the regulation is carried out by environmental inspectors.
