THE JULY 22, 1999 HAILSTORM IN LOGATEC
Abstract
In July 1999, the invasion of cold air over warm air masses resulted in some heavy thunderstorms over Slovenia. On July 22, a hailstorm distressed the area of Logatec and its surroundings. In the period from 1961–1999, 30 hail observations were recorded in the area of Logatec, which on six occasions caused mostly light damage to crops, with the exception of the 1999 hailstorm. The July 22, 1999 hailstorm caused immense damage to crops and forests, affecting them in the most sensitive growing stages – wheat just before harvest, maize in tasseling and silking. In forests, hail damage was intensified by strong winds. About 40,000 cubic metres of mostly coniferous trees were damaged. According to the first assessment, damage due to wood loss amounted to about 50 million Slovene tolars, but the total damage will be higher due to the costs of reforestation, reparation of forest roads, and bark beetle prevention.
