THE EFFECTS OF THE TURKEY EARTHQUAKE ON CIVIL ENGINEERING STRUCTURES
Abstract
Strong earthquakes are frequent and expected in the vicinity of Izmet, which was struck by a devastating earthquake on 17 August 1999. The numerous victims and extensive damage came as a surprise in a country with developed earthquake engineering. However, the codification of earthquake-resistant design apparently had little influence on construction practices. The well known causes of structure failure, such as soft stories, non-ductile details, weak stirrups, insufficient anchorage and liquefaction, were identified. New knowledge has been obtained from the analysis of numerous collapses of non-ductile reinforced concrete frames with hollow clay tile infills.
