THE 20 SEPTEMBER 1999 EARTHQUAKE IN TAIWAN
Abstract
The earthquake in Taiwan happened on 20th September. Its body wave magnitude (Mb) was 6.5, while the surface wave magnitude (Ms) and the moment magnitude (Mw) were both 7.7. The earthquake occurred at 17.47 UTC, with its hypocentre at a depth of 21 km. It claimed around 2,100 lives. The most pronounced consequences of the earthquake was not the damage to buildings, but the horizontal and vertical movements that appeared. The largest horizontal movements reached up to 9 metres, and up to 8 metres.
