THE USE OF LIGHTNING DETECTION SYSTEMS IN LIGHTNING HAZARD FORECASTS
Abstract
Lightning is an electric phenomenon which, in the discharge phase, produces an electomagnetic wave that can be detected at great distances. Methods used in lightning localization are described. The basic features of magnetic direction finding, time-of-arrival and the combined method are presented, together with their advantages and drawbacks. The Slovenian lightning detection system is connected with the Austrian lightning detection system in order to ensure greater detection accuracy, efficiency and redundancy. Different possibilities of using lightning data are discussed.
