Abstract

In the event of fire, life safety is the ultimate priority. And life safety is ensured if there are appropriate means of escape for victims of fire. This may include escape from a room endangered by fire to a safe room, or escape outdoors. Engineering methods enable the planning of safe escape routes, taking into account all potential fire hazards – this is the so-called performance method of planning. In case of specific risks, such as a fire hazard, the goals of protection are precisely defined. The main goal is to ensure the life safety of individuals, and this goal is achieved if, in the event of fire, people are able to escape to safety before the fire parameters exceed the critical values. The contribution presents practical examples of the use of the performance method in the planning of multi-purpose escape routes.
